Daniel Jumper (cello)

DANIEL JUMPER

Cello

We are delighted to have Daniel Jumper joining the Academy faculty this year.  A former student of our very own Amanda Turner, Daniel is both a professional performer and experienced instructor.

Daniel began his cello studies as Greenville Middle Academy and then at Eastside High in Greenville, SC.  While a student in Greenville, Daniel was the Principal Cellist for String Stations and a member of both the Greenville County Junior Youth Orchestra and later the Greenville County Youth Orchestra.  At SCMEA Regionals,  Daniel was Principal Cellist for three consecutive years.  After a move to Charlotte, Daniel continued his studies with Leigh Marsch and Amanda Turner.  He was selected as a member of the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra, serving as Principal Cellist under the direction of Dr. Ernest Pereira.

In the Charlotte area, Daniel has performed professionally with the Rothesay String Trio, the CSYO String Quartet, the UNCC Premier Piano Trio, and the UNCC Cello Choir.  Daniel was also the Principal Cellist for the UNCC Honors Chamber Orchestra and UNCC Symphony Orchestra.  Alongside his former teacher, Amanda Turner,  Daniel currently performs in the Magnify Worship Orchestra.

Daniel has received many honors including the Rising Star Award, Meg Hutchins Scholar, the National High School Orchestra Award and was selected as the Bonnie E. Cone String Quartet Scholar.  Daniel now begins his sixth year of teaching, and we welcome him to Charlotte Academy of Music!

I began taking cello lessons with Daniel in October 2010. He is not only a gifted cellist; he’s also a gifted teacher. Daniel is very knowledgeable and always answers my questions and explains or demonstrates in a way that I can understand. I especially appreciate the fact that he’s a stickler for good technique, and often challenges me with new material. I took lessons as a total beginner for about nine months before coming to the Academy. In less than a year under Daniel’s teaching, I’ve learned so much about cello fundamentals, as demonstrated in my much-improved bow hold and posture. His enthusiasm for the cello is contagious and I challenge myself to improve my technique with each practice. I’m proud of the fact that I can now tune my own instrument—a result of Daniel’s guidance and ear training. The fun thing about being an adult student is that this is the one place that I get to sit back and have fun learning something totally new. I’d definitely recommend Daniel to anyone who is interested in learning to play the cello!

I am very pleased to give Daniel Jumper my highest recommendation as a cellist and cello teacher.  Daniel is a superb teacher.  I regularly send my own private cello students to study with Daniel when I need to be out of town because I believe in his teaching so much.  I have had the pleasure of watching him teach cello students on outreach visits to local public schools that we have taken together.  I have also observed him critique my own college cello students regularly in studio class.  His comments are always clear, concise, and exactly right.  He treats others with respect and has a special gift for motivating others to learn.  His talent at teaching has already started to pay off.  For example, one of his private cello students began studying with Daniel as a total beginner last August (she had previously played violin but not very seriously).  Due to Daniel's excellent teaching, by January (just 6 months later) the student was able to audition successfully into the music major at UNC Charlotte on the cello!  She is a hard worker, but very few cello teachers could have taken her so far in such a short period of time.  Daniel has had numerous success stories that have helped him develop a strong reputation as a private cello teacher in Charlotte. I recommend him wholeheartedly and without reservation.
