The most meaningful takeaways from our camps and productions at Charlotte Academy of Music aren’t just the songs learned, scenes rehearsed, or artwork created—it’s the relationships that grow alongside them. Whether a child joins us for a visual art camp, a music camp, a drama camp, or a full-scale theatrical production, they quickly discover that CAM is a place where creativity brings people together.
Camps That Build Community
Every summer, our SPLASH! Summer Camps are filled with moments of shared discovery. Campers collaborate on art projects, make music together, step into characters, and encourage one another to try new things. In the process, friendships form naturally—over paint-splattered tables, group warm-ups, improv games, and laughter-filled breaks.
It’s one of our favorite traditions to see campers return year after year, often requesting to be placed with friends they met during a previous summer at CAM. Many families tell us their children count down the days until camp, excited not only for the activities, but for the chance to reunite with their “CAM friends.” What begins as a one-week experience often turns into a summer tradition built around creativity and connection.
From Summer Camps to the Stage
Those bonds don’t stop when camp ends. They frequently carry over into our productions, where teamwork and trust take center stage. A perfect example came from our SHINE Musical Theatre summer 2025 production of Matilda Jr. Throughout rehearsals, the cast grew into a close-knit ensemble—supporting one another, celebrating successes, and learning what it truly means to work together toward a common goal.
When the show closed, those students weren’t ready to let the experience end. Motivated by the friendships they had formed and the pride they felt in their work, the cast reunited months later to take on a new challenge together. In January 2026, they traveled to Atlanta to perform an excerpt from Matilda at the Junior Theatre Festival—a nationally recognized celebration of youth theatre. Their journey wasn’t just about performing at the festival; it was about being together and accomplishing something meaningful as a team.
More Than Arts Education
At CAM, we believe the arts are a powerful catalyst for connection. Through summer camps and productions, students learn collaboration, empathy, and confidence—while finding a community where they belong.
The skills they gain matter.
The performances they give matter.
But the friendships they form—the ones that bring them back summer after summer and inspire them to chase big goals together—may matter most of all.
Because at CAM, creativity doesn’t just inspire artists.
It builds lifelong bonds.
