The Guitar

One of the most popular instruments today – the guitar. This versatile instrument has inspired a diversity in music unlike any other. The guitar is at the forefront of blues, jazz, classical, rock, metal, and country music.

An acoustic guitar has steel strings and is usually played with a pick. It’s used in all sorts of music from country and folk to pop and rock. The electric guitar uses electronic pickups and amplifiers. All sorts of cool sounds can be made with an electric guitar using different amplifiers, distorters, and effects. Electric guitars are very popular in rock, pop, and jazz music. The classical guitar has nylon strings and a wide neck. It’s used to play mostly classical music, and often played with an ensemble. The bass guitar plays lower pitches works with the drums to form the band’s rhythm section.  Most bass guitars have only 4 strings, unlike the 6 strings of most standard guitars.

What's the Best Age to Start Guitar Lessons?

What is the best age to start guitar lessons? We recommend children be at least 8 years old before starting private guitar lessons. Prior to age 8, we recommend our Music Adventures program. Young guitar beginners should be appropriated fitted for the correct size guitar, and will typically find that they need a ¾ size instrument. Most kids will also find it much easier to begin their lessons with the electric guitar.

The guitar is often an instrument of great interest for teenagers. Simply put, the guitar is cool. The teen years are an important time in musical education, and a great time to reap many benefits. As a teen, students are now able to develop a deeper understanding of music and have the physical dexterity to do more technically. Music lessons also help teens develop greater confidence. During the teen years many guitarists enjoy the social development that comes with being part of a band or just playing for friends.

Many people who visit CAM are both surprised and delighted to learn that we offer lessons to adults. While it is true that we have a large number of younger students, we also have a large number of adult students with a wide range of goals, ability levels, and experience. Whether you played when you were younger and want to pick up your instrument again or you’re a complete beginner, CAM is the perfect place to learn to play the guitar!
