Violin Lessons

Charlotte Academy of Music violin teachers customize a program of traditional, Suzuki, O’Connor, or a combination of methods for their students. The choice of teaching method is specifically based on the age, learning style, and interests of each student. Our teachers will help you learn your favorite style of music, too. Learn to play classical, bluegrass, pop, country, folk, or even jazz in your violin lessons!

Many of our students students have gone on to earn placement in the Youth Orchestras of Charlotte, the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Union Symphony Youth Orchestra. Several of our strings students have also continued their instrument study at the collegiate level. No matter whether you wish to perform professionally, play at church or solely for your own enjoyment, our teachers can help you achieve your musical goals.

The Violin

Violins are important in a wide variety of musical genres. They are most prominent in the Western classical tradition. Violins are also important in country music, bluegrass music and in jazz. Electric violins with are often used in rock music and jazz fusion. Some of the most famous violinists of all time include Jascha Heifetz, Itzhak Perlman, Hilary Hahn, and Joshua Bell.

The violin was first known in 16th-century Italy, with some modifications occurring in the 18th and 19th centuries to give the instrument a more powerful sound and projection. In Europe, it served as the basis for the development of other stringed instruments used in Western classical music, such as the viola.

Violin Lessons

All violin lessons are taught as private, one-on-one music instruction and are available in lengths of 30, 45, and 60 minutes. We suggest kids and teenagers begin with 30-minute violin lessons and progress to longer lengths as your teacher recommends. For adults who have some previous experience, we recommend starting with 45- or 60-minute lessons.

Violin lessons for kids include learning fundamentals, such as posture, bow and left hand technique, and music reading. Fun songs and games are also added to keep students interested and engaged. We also love working with our adult students. Adults new to playing the violin start with basic technique and music reading and progress to play repertoire from a variety of genres. Intermediate and advanced students are introduced to advanced techniques, scales, speed work, and more challenging pieces. Violin lessons also boost coordination, finger strength, self-confidence, self-discipline, and right brain power in all students!
