Laura Black Joins CAM Faculty

Charlotte Academy of Music proudly welcomes voice and piano instructor, Laura Black, to our faculty! Laura is an accomplished performer in both musical theatre and opera. Originally from Gastonia, North Carolina, Laura recently relocated from New York City, where she was performing and teaching both voice and piano. She holds a Master of Music in Musical Theatre/ Opera Performance from Arizona State University and a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the North Carolina School of the Arts. Passionate about all genres of music, she has had the privilege to perform musical theatre and opera roles across the country. Favorite roles include Julie in Carousel, Graziella in West Side Story and Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi. Laura originated the role of Juliet in David Chesky’s Juliet and Romeo performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Laura believes in establishing a strong vocal technique, focusing on breathing, placement of sound, musical artistry and song interpretation. She has helped prepare her students for auditions locally, in regional theaters and Broadway. Laura welcomes piano students as well, also believing that voice students benefit from a foundation in piano. She believes that every student is unique and strives to discover what works best for the individual musician. She believes that it all starts with the students love for music and strives to keep a positive and encouraging environment.

Laura is thrilled to be back in the Carolinas and joining the CAM faculty. She lives with her husband Ned, daughter Maddie, and their pup Felix.
